Ok, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience...

I went to my first 12-step meeting yesterday.  It was great.  Only I went to a substance abuse 12-step meeting instead of a porn/sex addiction 12-step meeting... there actually is one in my area, but I chickened out 'cause I couldn't stand the thought of being the only woman in a room of porn/sex addicted men.

I'm sure I should just gulp, be brave and go, or do you think the chemical addiction 12-steps will work in lieu of the one that better addresses my addictions?  Has anyone used 12-step meetings as part of your recovery?

Thanks!  Q

Anything that is going to help can be good.  On the same note...not sure if going to a men's group is an effective means.  A woman's group would be a much better option. This is just one opinion but here is some reasoning: Substance addictions do not care about gender. Eating disorders do not care about gender. Alcohol addiction...same thing...does not differ much with gender.  Sexual addictions...they do differ with gender. Although a group can be a vital means in recovery, mens groups are very focused from the standpoint of sexual addiction from the male perspective.

If there is not a sex addicts womens group in your area, the next best thing would be to counsel one on one with someone who can give you the personal perspective needed in recovery.  We also recommend going somewhere that focuses on sexual addiction from the standpoint of how it effects the brain and gives one tools to heal the pathways that have been created through sexually addictive behavoirs.  12 steps works for some and for others they need a more direct approach. What you learn in the substance group can definately cross over to your needs so that may be a better option than a mens group.  If you do not have the Innergold manual, we strongly suggest getting a copy and reading through it. This will be a HUGE boost in your recovery and will likely give you clarity in how to proceed.

i have never personally been to 12 steps but i agree that any help is good help. however, i don't think i would go to a mens group.

i think innergold has some programs or something that might be able to help you with some of this.

mr moderator, what programs do you have to help someone that does not live near you or is looking for help. i know you have the manual. what else?

i have talked to a lot of people who have gone through 12 steps and it works for some and does not for others. if it works for you, great. if you are still struggling, i honestly would recommend innergold's stuff. they are good. it has helped me and i thought i was a lost cause dealing with this. keep us posted queries.

For those who are interested, there is the option of phone counseling sessions.  There is also a weekly podcast that really digs into the information received from different group and one-on-one counseling sessions during each week. All the podcast information is confidential and without names of clients of course.
